Arthur was born in Derbyshire, and he claimed that he was born on the 9th November 1876. He enlisted at Trentham, New Zealand, 24th August 1915, stating his occupation as a farmer, and his address as Marton, New Zealand.
He was five feet seven inches in height, had a dark complexion, hazel eyes and iron grey hair, and he belonged to the Church of England.
